Welcome to the TMX Monthly Track Contest (MTC), January 2020!

In the MTC, you must build a track on a given theme. All of the entered tracks will be rated by judges and a winner will be found.

The Details:
Let's have a look at the details of the contest:

Theme of the Month: Checkpoint Party
Build a track with 20 or more checkpoints.

Deadline: January 26th, 2020.

Prizes:
The winner will be able to pick a track to showcase on the front page* + 3000 coppers
1000 coppers
500 coppers

*The track can be a self-made creation or the work of someone else (which has got a maximum of 10 awards already).

The rules:
Build a race track with at least 20 checkpoints.
The author time shouldn't exceed 90 seconds (1 minute 30 seconds).
All checkpoints must be respawnable.
Blockmixing is allowed.
TM Unlimiter requirement is not allowed.
PX tracks are not allowed.
You may submit one track only.
Include the letter combination MTC somewhere in the track name so it can be easily identified.

General tips:
The "General tips" are just recommendations. You won't get disqualified if you do not follow them, but they tend to help your track and its appreciation by general player population.

Remember that you have got about four weeks to build your track. Take some time for testing, or let others test your track in the Beta Area.
Don't forget to check your track for unintentional shortcuts.
A MediaTracker GPS showing the route does not relieve you of your moral obligation to provide guidance during the race (signs or other visual hints on where to go).
Always provide your track on TMX with a screenshot that shows something from the track, and add a description of what can people expect if they play your track.
You will get more points in the "theme" category if your map is a creative and fun as possible with the restrictions. Stacking more than 2-3 checkpoints next to each other will likely lose you points.
Important: To enter a track, simply upload it and post your submission in this thread.

If you want to judge:
copy the list that's in the message below
write your scores (single score from 0 to 10) next to the track names with a short explanation, if possible. Since the map number is low enough, you have to judge all of the tracks. If you submitted a track to this MTC, you can still judge, but you can't vote on your own track.
send me your scores (on TMX:   nod32»UD)
odd or otherwise suspicious judging (like voting every track a 10 and one a 0) will not be counted

The voting will end on Sunday, February 2nd if I get at least 4 votes by that date; if not, the judging will end 24 hours after I receive the 4th vote (I'll keep the status updated).

Good luck and have fun.

We hope many people participate!

If you want to make a donation towards future prize pools, please send coppers to the login: radpl

Fun fact: This is the first MTC hosted in January since 2015. I think that's kinda neat.

I did try making one but found it a lot harder than I would have liked, so I stopped making it. In any case, it seems like time is up, or about to be up.

So this marks the end of the first MTC of 2020 and the first time with the "new" judging system, I do have to say that it's been a good experience from my side and results came rather fast (although not as fast as I was expecting them to - this may be due to the fact that there were 11 tracks to judge after all). There are still some problems I'd like to address, the biggest ones being the differences between max and min score between the judges (Frozen & Nitro had almost double the difference of Egan's) and the lack of agreement regarding which elements the tracks should be judged on. For the second one I'll try to do a short writeup on which view the theme should be approached from for every theme, for the first one - I don't know, to be honest - this has been a problem in MTC's before and I don't think there's a good way to nullify that issue without overcomplicating the system itself. That's it from me, feel free to comment if you have any suggestions.

Here are the official results of the TMX Monthly Track Contest (MTC), January 2020!

RESULTS

Hageldave takes the first place with his diverse take on island FS
Godspeed! [MTC] by   Hageldave

(33,7/40 points)

"21 Checkpoints (MTC) by   iRoC" (32,8/40 points)

"[mtc] I C you P by   VMan_2002" (29,6/40 points)

Here you can view the whole results with all submitted scores (google sheet).

Don't forget, if we have 5 judges, the highest and lowest score of each map will be ignored, making the results even closer and more fair

Congrats to Hageldave!

Also, why are egan's scores so low? Objectively, Hageldave's map is fantastic. I understand the personal aspect of judging but to give a 5.7/10 is completely outrageous.

Congrats to the winners!

I'd love to know why I lost 6.5 points according to frozenkhaos just because my map is hard to play. Does difficulty take up 70% of the score or am I missing something? I do understand the map is really hard to play if you aren't great at the game, but removing 6.5 points for that as a sole reason seems a bit outrageous to me, especially for a reason that is so dependent on the judge's skill more than on the mapper's.

The point is, I've been trying to be creative with mapping for MTC lately but every time I don't build linear, boring FS transitionals like the ones I won with, I seem to get fewer and fewer points. It feels very unmotivating to push the creative aspect of your map and their design just to be rewarded with a 3.5.

so you are sad you didnt win.....why dont you say it straight?

that sentence alone just shows me you dont do it for the event, you do it to win, and thats sad. If i would whine like this if my MTC is to bad to win bcuz players are to bad to drive it, this site would be full of whinny comments.
IMO MTC is for fun, trying to do something different for mappers than the usual stuff they make and not to win the MTC, if you came up with a new idea and it didnt work out for you, thats life man, maybe you know that from RL.

but i dont understand your ranting about a fking score nobody gives a sht about.

I'm just really wondering why I would get a 9 and a 3.5 in the same voting. Usually, I get pretty consistent scores, even if I end up with a similar placement to this one.

Also, yes, I participate to a mapping contest with the aim of winning it, because that's what contests are for. Hence me spending time to polish my maps. Maps I spend a lot of time on should, in my opinion, deserve to be judged and scored properly. If not, I would have no reason to polish my maps, which would lower their quality. Then, if I were to participate with bad maps (and if everyone did), it would lower the quality of the event, lower the quality of mapping overall (because people would need to submit worse and worse maps to achieve good results), which in turn would cause a worsened judging (why would anyone want to judge 15 bad maps?), and that's how things go south.

Think of it like that: scores are irregular, not only for my map, but also for other maps. I'm wondering why it is the case. If nobody can answer that, then the voting system and scoring system might need some changes. I simply don't see a logical way of having a 9 and a 3.5 score for the same map, or to take other maps from the same MTC as examples, an 8 and a 4 score, or a 9 and a 5.7, etc. Nitroguy mentioned it earlier and nobody seemed to have an issue with him saying it:

I understand the personal aspect of judging but to give a 5.7/10 is completely outrageous.

If you want me to say it the same way, then:

I understand the personal aspect of judging but to give the same map a 9/10 and a 3.5/10 is completely outrageous.

To go back to what you quoted from me, I am sad the scores turned out the way they did, all over the place with seemingly no objective reasoning behind them. It makes me sad to spend time on my maps for them to be judged as if it was a lottery.

To you it might seem like a "fking score nobody gives a sht about", but why would we even bother judging if nobody cared about it in the first place? I care about it, I'm sure other people do too. It's also a way to get constructive criticism on your mapping, which... did not happen here. All of this does make me sad and motivates me less and less to spend time mapping for the event.

Brainhead, why do you never have anything positive or supportive to say? There are no issues here that directly affected you, so if you don't have anything nice to say, there's no need to say anything at all.
