That's right, after many years, the Freestyle Cup is back for a 3 month season!

•What is the freestyle cup?

The freestyle cup is what combines Trackmania and skate-themed stunts for a fun-filled competition! Freestyle, unlike the classic stunt mode in TM, has no in-game point system and requires a different set of skills compared to normal stunts. A typical freestyle map will have plenty of sections for which you can show off your skateboard skills, but with a TM vehicle. There will be a different map selected for each month.

•What is the goal of the freestyle cup?

The goal for each month is to create your absolute best 2-minute run on a freestyle map. Fill your run with as many stunts as possible and drive as clean and smoothly as possible, as if it were all recorded. At the end of each month, our judges will rate the run out of 500 points. The driver with the most amount of points across all three months will be crowned the winner!

•What kind of stunts are the judges looking for?

If you have any skateboard experience, you probably know terms like "50/50", "fakie", and "5-0", but that knowledge is not required. Here are a few examples of some freestyle stunts & tricks:

540 to slide, by Etii

backflip to noseslide, by Timae

primo-slide to fakie 5-0, by Tuture

270 to slide, by Alex_E3

Along with these gifs, there are some videos as well. In the freestyle cups from 2007-2009, a few videos were made of the winning runs from various months, called "Ze Run."

Koko's run from August 2008
Timae's run from September 2008

...And some fantastic compilations from previous seasons:

FC January-May 2007
FC 2006 (Sadly the video is muted)

•How does scoring work?

As stated before, the goal is to fit as much into 2 minutes as possible, but still keep the driving smooth. There are many different categories for scoring in freestyle:

Tricks (Max 150 pts.): Stunts & tricks can each be scored from 0-9 points depending on how complex they are. Multiple tricks can be chained together for combos, as seen in the gifs.

Originality (Max 100 pts.): Create your own unique route with the best stunts you can do. Do not repeat the same stunts too many times, Don't use the same ramp/section more than once or twice, go out of your way to reach a further area, and innovate!

Style (Max 100 pts.): Smoothness is key. Do your best to land each stunt on all four wheels, don't let the vehicle roll over, and keep moving. No involuntary stops!

Ramps/Sections (Max 100 pts.): It's important to use as much of the map as time allows.. Try to reach the highest and lowest areas of the map and use as many ramps as possible.

Penalties (Max 50 pts.): Your run must be within the time limit of 1:55-2:05. For each second outside the time frame, a 1-point penalty will be deducted. All time penalties are rounded up to the next second. For example, if your run is 2:07.13, it will be rounded up to 2:08 and you will receive a 3-point penalty. Even if your run is 2:05.01, that is a 1-point penalty.

Respawns will also be a penalty. Five points for the first one, then 15, 30, 50, 75....hopefully you don't respawn this many times.

Theoretically, 500 points is possible but your run would need to be as flawless as a perfect press-forward map in order to achieve that. In the freestyle cup, above-average runs range from 175-225 points, and great runs range from 225-275 points. Anything over 300 points is extremely difficult to achieve.

•The first map will be announced on October 1st, 2019. You will have until October 30th, 2019 to submit your run.

To submit a run, private message me a link to your replay. Until the deadline, you can send as many replays as you'd like, but only the most recent one will count.

•Do you have plenty of freestyle experience and are interested in judging? It would be a pleasure to have you sign up. Unlike the MTCs, judges are allowed to participate in the Freestyle Cup. They will judge all replays except their own. In order to better average the scores, I'm looking for as many judges as I can find. Send me a message if you'd like to sign up.

Any questions? Feel free to ask!

The map of the month for October is one of my personal favorites that is perfect for all skill levels. Sadly it's not uploaded to TMX so links will be provided. The map is Free-Pouille by   Skateur74.

Free-Pouille [CP]
Free-Pouille [1 CP]

Use the 1-cp version for your run of course

first stunt, now freestyle, im curious if there will ever be a showdrift competition/server event for DRIFTERS too, its also lot of fun to watch/do. And i think its beside freestyle the earliest player-created mode in TM.

i dont like that you have to upload your replays to another side just to pm the TA to show it to him, why not do several server events with LIVE scores, judges ect. Everyone can practice freestyle to make a good replay, live its way more exciting imo.....

but cool one

PS: drifters unite and push the TMX Admins to make a event for us.

I'm going to give this a shot... The problem is, I'm not sure which run I've done so far would be better to submit at this early stage of this round. I've done a few of them, but nothing yet which I feel is close to perfect...

Thankfully you have about 4 more weeks! Also a tip: Sometimes focusing more on doing plenty of easier, shorter tricks is a good strategy

Ohohoh, exciting, will definitely take part! Already found my 40s first seconds, i don't know what to think about the respawn rule, it can really help to reach faster the other side of the map to get more tricks done, but it really ruins the feeling of "ze run" where everything flows smoothly...

to add a few things to nitroguys post...

as it was written before, using lots of ramps is a very decent way to get to easy points. but if your run just do like 4 backflips and 3 boardslides, creativity / style is lost. also, usually there are some rather hard spots in each map - for those willing to try them and getting them done, the judges were (in former days) able to add some "risk points" or whatever they were called. so, if you're brave enough, feel free to mix them in.

combos will usually be rated with extra points. so (i dont have the schedule right in front of me for now), but for example backflip + 5-0 (as a combo) can be for example 12 points, whereas backflip and 5-0 in seperated spots would be something alike 7 or 8 points.

additionally, having longer grinds/slides will usually count as "achievements", since they are pretty hard on other environments then bay. there were some sort of regularity based on seconds, how long the grind was - from a short kiss (like < 1 sec), over slide (< 3 sec) to serious slide (<10 seconds); which will add some points here and there. based on those regulartities you will earn your score.

try to find a routing which combines stunts, slides (+combos) and having fun playing the cup. if those components come together, you will most likely be part of the top 10. balance between those is key. using different spots all the way just to go backflips for example will reduce the points you get for each one. doing backflips f.e. too consecutively, the first one will earn you like 5 points, the 3rd on 3 points (and so on).

using the respawn "if obviously not needed" (usually used if the car is flipped and wont turn back) will cause heavier damage to the run. you will definetely corrupt style and creativity and most likely re-use a section of the map. even if it sounds like "only 5 points" charging in the first place, most of the judges were pretty harsh on such decisions, since it was something cheat-alike. but since those rules were from years ago, i am pretty sure, there is lots of iteration space for that specific rule. to be honest, if i would see this kind of behaviour in a run, its definetely worth of like -25 points or even higher. (as far as i can tell, there werent lots of it, i cant even remember someone doing it, as a former judge).

have fun guys. its good see, that there are some people still getting sort of hyped up.

PS: good init nitroguy. good luck in finding judges!

EDIT: by the way, Free-Pouille was played with the freestylecup back in september 2007 (12 years ago, omg i am getting old). you can get some inspiration if you want to here:

I am wondering,
What is better?
Driving the run at good speed for smoothness and sacrificing for example slide time (as you are fast) or is it better to slow down, breaking the flow a bit to force a bit more the tricks ?

That's the big question...only the best can get a perfect balance of both But if I had to choose, I would say smoothness is more important. Drive your run as if it were being recorded.
