I'd like to thank everyone for a great contest last month You all did great, and I'm very pleased with the rate of participation. Think we can increase it for this month?

Now to the contest...

OVERVIEW

The idea is for anyone interested to build one or several tracks on a specific theme (see below), upload them to TMX and post them in this topic. You have the first part of the month for this, all the way to the 17th.

As tracks enter the contest they can be raced by both the authors themselves, as well others who just want to drive rather than build tracks. Racing begins once the first track enters the contest, and ends on the 27th.

In the end, contestants receive points – Track Points and Driver’s Points – depending on their performance. Several winners are then revealed based on those points (see “Scoring System” below).

THE DETAILS

Building: Anyone who wants can build tracks and link to them in this topic to enter the contest. Obviously, a few rules must be followed:

1. Each contestant may enter a maximum of three (3) tracks each month.
2. All tracks entered must have been uploaded to the exchange during the ongoing month. Tracks uploaded before the 1st of the ongoing month may not enter the contest.
3. All tracks entered must fit the theme of the month (see below). Since this can sometimes be arguable, you may post or PM a complaint on a track you believe is unsuitable for the contest. However, I (Jozii) will be the final judge in such matters.
4. Awards given to track (which then determines which track is the winning one) are only counted for the first 10 days after the track has been uploaded. This is to maintain a fair level for all tracks, so tracks uploaded on the 1st won't have an advantage over those uploaded on the 17th.
5. The final day for entering tracks to the contest is on the 17th.

The winners are Best Track, which is the track with the most awards, and Best Author, which is the builder with the most Track Points (see “Scoring System” below).

Driving: Whether you have entered a track or not, you may race the tracks that have entered the contest. This will be done between the 18th and 27th. You must visit the TMU Blog Server and race the tracks there to earn Driver's Points.

The winner is the driver with the most Driver's Points at the end of each month (see “Schedule” and “Scoring System” below).

Schedule

Every month, the following schedule takes affect:

1st to 17th – Track Building. You may build tracks (max three) and post them in this topic to enter the contest. Each track must fit the “Theme of the Month”.
18th to 27th – Driving. Race the tracks on the TMU Blog Server, as stated above.
1st to 27th – Awarding. You may award the tracks you like. The track with the most awards in the end win (so uploading your track early can be an advantage – but not a requirement).
28th – Results. Sometime during the 28th of each month, the monthly results will be published.
Last Days – Preparations. After the results have been made official, a new round will be prepared, which will start on the 1st of the following month.

Theme of the Month

Complexity

Specifications

- All environments are accepted
- The track must be complex, meaning it must be put in a smaller area and not have wide open spaces
- Use the layout of the track to make the route complex (it's possible to make it fast yet complex, if the track is well designed, but normally the tracks would be quite slow and technical)
- Use scenery to add to the complexity feeling
- Optional: Include a lot of places where you cross other parts of the actual track through jumps, normal crossroads, or anything else.

Scoring System

The Scoring System is what we’ll use to find the winners (except for Best Track). There are the following categories to “conquer”:

Best Track – The track with the most awards once the contest is over.
Best Author – The author with the most Track Points (TB’s).
Best Driver – The driver with the most Driver’s points (DP’s).
Overall Winner – The contestant with the most points in total (TB’s plus DP’s).

The Scoring System is simple: You receive Driver’s Points for driving tracks, and Track Points for building tracks. The following is a list of what you get points for, and how many points you get:

- 1 DP for each track you submit a time on.
- 1 DP per player you beat on any given track.
- 3 TP per award on your most awarded track (if you enter several to the contest).
- 1 TP per award on any other track you have entered.

could you specify 'complex' a bit more? Would the route be complex, or would the track be very hard on first sight? Should the track be technical thus making a perfect route complex?

Great idea..but it'l be a bit more complicated to build for this month
I presume you will be rating if the tracks are complex enough..?

so it doesn't matter in which environment it is?! well, that would become certainly a techtrack on a small building area...

i'll see if i'm able to make a track (i hope so this time!!)...

hmm, sounds neat...
maybe i could make it this time even
just please specify complex a bit more, shall it be rather like a maze, or shall the route be hard to find or jsut many reuses and such?

Complex would basically mean that the track is buildt on a smaller space. It would probably also become technical, but not neccessarily - try to be a bit creative!

I don't mean that the track should be like a maze and the rout should be hard to find - a very straight-forward track but with a lot of twists and turns packed in a small space would also be considered complex, even though the rout is very easy to find.

With the optional specification I was hoping to see tracks where you i online mode see your opponents a lot, even if they are on another part of the track.

Basically, the rules are just rough guidelines. I will personally check every track before it is added to the tracks list to make sure no tracks that are completely outside the theme enter the contest. However, I won't be too strict. Also, if you should find a track which you don't think suit the requirements, please let me know and I'll consider removing it.

I hope that makes things clearer

I believe Jozii meant "COMPACT", which is an opposite of "STRETCHED OUT" or "LARGE".

Normal tracks "waste" building space: For a single tile of actual track, there's roughly 10 - 100 spatial units NOT used. Compact track, on the other hand, puts the same amount of track onto a much more "compressed" space.

However, I have to object against this topic.

Reason for this objection is that the theme of the month cannot be precisely specified, which means it will be difficult to judge whether a certain track DOES fit the theme or not; more than that, it is QUITE probable that tracks which do not try to be as compact as possible will be more entertaining and thus gain more awards. What I'm saying is: The more the builder tries to build according to the theme, the worse his results will be. You admit it yourself - it is possible to build a fast compact track, but usually they are slower and more technical; while majority of players prefers speed over technical...

I really suggest changing the theme, or define it in a different way.

A possible alternate definition would be:

The track must be built within a 15x15 ground squares area, and there must be at least 3 places (when watched from top) where at least 3 different "routes" intersect OR go above one another (i.e., you either make an intersection or bridge-like track there).

This would be perfectly judgable and would result in the track being quite compact and complex, yet it would allow for the needed freedom.

1) I do NOT mean compact! I mean complex tracks would most likely become more "compressed" than what's average, but by now means do the track have to be so - a pre-difined space is not the solution. I simply mean that the track should have a more complex design meaning it is not as "simple" or "straight-forward" as the average.

And as I said, and which was also the case in several of the Nations editions of this contest, the specifications are only rough, and I won't be that strict when it comes to following them. See them more as quidlines. But of course, if a track is too far off, it will be removed.

Also, I chose a more unusual theme for seveal reasons, mainly to force people to build tracks for the contest, and not just enter tracks they would have built anyway (btw, adding a hint that the track was built for this contest either in the title, the MT work, the author comments, or anywhere else is appreciated ).

And finally, I saw a track online a while ago (I belive it was on the Norwegian serber "No Fear", which is no unfortunately offline). That's the track that inspired this months theme. It had some very well calculated jumps (smaller ones that jumped over other sections of the route), a quite technical design with lots of interesting turns and twists, and some innovative sections where the complexity of the track was taken advantage of. And if I remember correctly, the track had plenty of awards here at TMX, so by no means do a track have to be fast rather than technical.

well, 15x15 is a small area alcator...

look at the nations' tracks from DerFeineHerr, Claustrophoßia for example, that one is build on a 35x35 building ground (not exact!!), and is techy. however, due it's many crossing roads and complex design, it would fit in this contest excacly...

maybe something more like techy like bit complex tracks, where has to be at least one crossroad or something...

however, i like this contest-idea, so i hope i can make one too...

-edit- after reading jozii's post: i would of course place a note in the author comments of my coming tracks when it has entered this contest, however, i won't ever place that in the trackname or intro, i'm sorry...

The AC is fine, JJ It's usually just Alcator who adds the contest title in the the track name or MT work (so extra creds for that, Alcator ). Perhaps I should re-include the little rule in Nations where I awarded tracks which mentioned the contest somewhere related to the track (unless I disliked it, of course), and no the other tracks...?

That was quick, Djoszee. Even though the track isn't the most complex track ever, it could function as a guideline for other participants, as this track without doubt meets the requirements

And I just relize we'll probably see a lot of Stadium tracks as the theme might be easier to follow in stadium. But it would be nice if someone could come up with something in another environment - I belive coast shouldn't be too difficult to make a complex track in

Phew I finished this track 4 days ago, I thought it wait if it could match the requirements of this competition before uploading. I guess it did
